Introduction: Building a Simple DIY Birdhouse
This post details how to build a basic birdhouse, perfect for beginner woodworkers. The design is simple, sturdy, and attractive to many common backyard birds. We'll cover the materials needed, step-by-step instructions, and some finishing touches to make your birdhouse a welcome home for feathered friends.
Materials and Tools:
Before you start, gather the following:
  • Wood: A single board of untreated pine or cedar (approximately 1"x6"x8'). Cedar is naturally weather-resistant, but pine is cheaper and can be painted or sealed.
  • Fasteners: Galvanized nails or exterior-grade screws (1 1/4" or 1 1/2" long).
  • Wood Glue: Exterior-grade wood glue.
  • Saw: Hand saw, circular saw, or table saw.
  • Drill: With various sized drill bits, including one suitable for creating the entrance hole.
  • Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements.
  • Pencil: For marking cuts.
  • Sandpaper: (Medium and fine grit).
  • Clamps: (Optional, but helpful).
  • Safety Glasses: Crucial for eye protection.
  • Step 1: Cutting the Pieces:
Refer to the cutting diagram below (assume we have one with the following dimensions). These dimensions are a guideline and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.
  • Front: 6" wide x 8" high
  • Back: 6" wide x 10" high
  • Sides: 6" wide x 7" high (Cut two pieces)
  • Bottom: 6" wide x 6" long
  • Roof: 7" wide x 9" long (Cut two pieces)
  • Carefully measure and cut each piece of wood according to the dimensions. Accuracy is key for a well-fitting birdhouse. Use a square to ensure your cuts are perpendicular. Sand all cut edges smooth.
    Step 2: Assembling the Box:
Apply wood glue to the edges of the bottom piece. Attach the two side pieces to the bottom, ensuring they are flush. Clamp (if available) and secure with nails or screws. Next, attach the front and back pieces to the sides and bottom, again using glue and fasteners. Ensure the back extends above the front to create the sloping roof.
Step 3: Creating the Entrance Hole:
On the front piece, drill an entrance hole. The size of the hole determines what kind of birds will be able to use the house:
  • 1 1/4" hole: Wrens, Chickadees
  • 1 1/2" hole: Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers
  • The hole should be located about 2 inches from the top of the front piece. Sand the edges of the hole to prevent splinters.
    Step 4: Attaching the Roof:
Apply glue to the top edges of the front, back, and side pieces. Attach the roof pieces, ensuring they overhang slightly on all sides. Secure with nails or screws. The overlapping roof will provide protection from rain.
Step 5: Adding Ventilation and Drainage:
Drill a few small drainage holes (1/4" diameter) in the bottom of the birdhouse. These will prevent water from accumulating. Also, drill small ventilation holes near the top of the sides to help keep the birdhouse cool in the summer.
    Step 6: Finishing Touches:
Sand the entire birdhouse to remove any rough edges or splinters. You can leave the birdhouse unfinished, or you can paint or stain it. If painting, use a light color (e.g., beige, gray, light green) and avoid bright colors, which can attract predators. Be sure to use exterior-grade paint or stain. Avoid painting the inside of the birdhouse.
    Step 7: Mounting the Birdhouse:
Consider how you will mount the birdhouse. Options include:
  • Pole Mounting: Attach a mounting bracket to the back of the birdhouse.
  • Hanging: Drill holes near the top corners of the back and use wire or rope to hang the birdhouse.
  • Choose a location away from heavy foot traffic and predators. Face the entrance away from prevailing winds.
    Conclusion:
Congratulations! You've successfully built a simple DIY birdhouse. With a little care and attention, your birdhouse will provide a safe and comfortable home for birds in your backyard for years to come. Enjoy watching your new tenants move in! Remember to clean the birdhouse out annually after nesting season is over.
